USD 2017: Hour Children (Long Island City, Queens)

NATURE & PURPOSE OF SERVICE SITE:

The mission of Hour Children is to help incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their children successfully rejoin the community, reunify with their families, and build healthy, independent and secure lives. To accomplish this, Hour Children provides compassionate and comprehensive services and encourages all to live and interact with dignity and respect. Hour Children® was named to acknowledge the important hours that shape the life of a child with an incarcerated mother – the hour of their mother’s arrest, the hour of their visit, and the hour of her release.

Hour Children’s three thrift shops provide a wide variety of high quality apparel and designer clothing, vintage and antique furniture, housewares, art, jewelry items, and children’s items at reasonable prices. Providing a valuable resource for the community, these busy shops provide employment and training for Hour Children program participants and revenue to support Hour Children programs.

USD volunteers will assist at one of the houses with painting the walls, cleaning up and then moving some furniture to from the warehouse into the house.  You will have the opportunity to learn about Hour Children's housing model close up and to see the HC campus.
