Reflective Writing in the STEM Disciplines
Event box
Process writing is an essential reflective practice. In this online workshop, we make space to assess how our initial thoughts have evolved by exploring them in writing and by hearing the writing of our peers. This workshop will investigate the principles and practices of metacognitive writing and focus on how to make process writing integral to our teaching in the STEM disciplines. We will interrogate our goals as educators and explore how reflective practices can promote equitable participation in learning communities. In an era when AI writing tools can privilege results over process, we will discover what can happen when we make reflection central to our students’ learning.
This workshop is led by Dumaine Williams (B.A., Bard College, M.A., Montclair State University, Ph.D., Stony Brook University) is Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of the Early College for Bard College. He has led Language & Thinking and IWT workshops for faculty and students at several college and early college campuses and teacher certification and in-service training workshops for faculty in various school districts. Dumaine's area of focus at IWT is writing to learn in STEM disciplines and his areas of research and teaching include endocrinology, epidemiology, and health inequality.
