More Than Just a Syllabus Decision: How Faculty Can Turn Textbook Choices into Vincentian Social Action

In this interactive session, we’ll share highlights from our recent research and campus-wide initiative aimed at tackling one of the most persistent—and solvable—barriers to student success: the rising cost of textbooks and course materials. Grounded in our university’s Catholic and Vincentian mission, our work reframes the act of selecting course materials as a powerful form of social action—one that promotes equity, dignity, and academic access for all students.

We’ll move beyond a traditional presentation format to actively engage in conversations about textbook and course materials affordability. Together, we’ll explore creative, mission-aligned strategies for reducing student costs, including Open Educational Resources (OER), library reserves, and other publisher opportunities.  We’ll also share faculty narratives and practical tools that emerged from our educational campaign and research.

Whether you’ve already experimented with affordable materials or are just curious about how to start, we invite you to join us as we rethink what it means to serve our students—one textbook decision at a time.
