RSVP REQUIRED: Click here to register!
NATURE AND PURPOSE OF SERVICE SITE:
Founded in 1982, St. John’s Bread & Life works to alleviate hunger and poverty in Brooklyn and Queens. For many families and individuals, the meals that are provided are the only meals they have. By first addressing the basic needs of poor New Yorkers, Bread & Life aims to help people achieve self-sufficiency, in addition to educating the public about the persistence of hunger and poverty in our communities.
St. John's volunteers will assist with the food pantry and/or preparing/distributing grocery items to Bread & Life clients. These tasks may include: packing pantry bags; stocking food items for packing; preparing produce and protein bags; packing meals/spoons for "Grab & Go"; breaking down boxes. Volunteers will also receive a brief tour of the facility and learn about the resources offered to the Bedford-Stuyvesant community.
PLEASE NOTE: The dress code for volunteers includes comfortable clothing and footwear as volunteers will be on their feet and moving throughout their shift. For safety purposes, volunteers should NOT wear open footwear (e.g., sandals, flip flops), and long pants/skirts are recommended. Should any volunteers be needed in the kitchen area, they will be provided with hair nets, aprons and gloves.
