Slow Teaching in Fast Times

Feel like you are drowning in the onslaught of info about AI? Wondering how to make your teaching thrive in the current environment? Me too! With so much information, so many changes, and so much to keep up with, I am slowing down, assessing the landscape, and exploring what I know to be true about good teaching … and what elements of good teaching will persist within and beyond the paradigm shifts we are currently experiencing.

During the 2023-2024 school year, while serving as a CFSD Fellow, I explored teaching ideas that support engagement. After attending the Teaching Professor Online Conference, I developed a Faculty Working Group that invited faculty members from across the University to engage in a semester-long inquiry focused on pedagogical growth and development. Slow Teaching in Fast Times centers around these pedagogical explorations and shares meaningful insights from Distracted by James Lang and The New College Classroom by Davidson and Katopodis. Both texts offer practical and interesting ideas for how to increase rigor in the higher education classroom and make meaningful spaces of learning in our classrooms. Session attendees can expect to: 1) identify three quick ways to increase engagement in the higher ed classroom, and 2) identify one strategy to practice implementing during the spring semester.

Using Interviews with Entrepreneurs to Teach Leadership

The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how pre-recorded interviews with entrepreneurs can be used to teach students about leadership in an online course. The researcher (also instructor) interviewed founders on camera and via Zoom to better understand their path to becoming a business owner in the sports industry. The interviews were then uploaded to YouTube so that students had access to them on demand.
