"At the Front with a Camera”: Percy A. Brown, British Photojournalist, Interned Correspondent, and Eyewitness Reporter Covers the First World War (1914-1920)

Armed with a rusty camera and a bicycle, Percy A. Brown, a British working-class carpenter, figure skater, photo correspondent, and freelance journalist reported the Great War (1914-1918) for the London Graphic. He zigzagged his way through towns, seaside ports and battlefields along the Western Front. Brown worked around French censors to take pictures and get access to war news. After German troops caught him and accused him of being a spy in 1915, he spent three years in enemy prison near Berlin, where he continued to take pictures and produce journalism. Brown—whose story has remained largely untold—would go on to become an international reporter, successful author, and Fleet Street personality.
