Moderator: Syed Ahmad Chan Bukhari, Collins College of Professional Studies, Computer Science, Mathematics and Science
Speaker: Dr. Syed Aziz Shah, Associate Professor in the Research Center for Intelligence Healthcare(CIH) at Coventry University, England, UK.

Talk Summary:
As the COVID-19 disease began to spread across the world, the elderly population (aged 65+) experienced greater adverse effects from the pandemic, including more severe complications, higher mortality and disruptions to monitoring their ADL, including critical events (falls and wandering behavior) and access to care. This disruption has been observed at homes and in care homes, where contact with family members and caregivers becomes more limited, due to isolation and lockdown. Statistics indicate that more than 70% of the elderly experience the types of critical events mentioned earlier when performing ADL, and their consequences can lead to a decreased quality of life and serious injuries, as well as heavy financial impact on the health and social care services. Innovative technological solutions, such as remote continuous monitoring using sensing devices, have the potential to improve quality of life and preserve safe, independent living with dignity, especially under isolation and lockdown, in homes or care homes.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Syed Aziz Shah was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Research Centre for Intelligent Healthcare (CIH) at Coventry University (CU) in 2020. He is an interdisciplinary researcher focusing on advanced radio frequency (RF) sensor design and signal processing using RF and THz sensing, specifically for healthcare applications. He is highly motivated to utilize and develop advanced technologies that address the unmet healthcare challenges of unobtrusive monitoring of older adult daily activities for health and wellbeing purposes.

Dr. Aziz has published 100 scientific articles (75 in top-tier peer-reviewed multidisciplinary journals including IEEE TAP, IEEE AWPL and IEEE JBHI), given 4 presentations at leading international peer-reviewed conferences (including RADAR Conference France, UCET Conference UK and AECT Conference KSA). He has also served as technical chairperson for leading conferences including UCET, and SIA, and received distinguished guest talk invitations from Glasgow Caledonian University (UK), National University of Science and Technology (Pakistan), North West Polytechnical University (China) and Palestine Technical University (Palestine). Dr. Aziz received the endorsement of an "Emerging Leader’ indicative of a UK exceptional talent candidate in year 2018. This award was given for pioneering work in the field of RF sensing for remote patient monitoring. This prestigious award is given to early-career, world-leading innovators and scientists from the esteemed Royal Academy of Engineering.

The event will be held both in-person, in St. Augustine Hall 2nd Fl., room 145 and remotely via WebEx.  The meeting link will be sent to registrants prior to the event.
